Does Samsung TV Work with HomeKit? How To Connect
I love trying out new gadgets and adding them to my smart home ecosystem.
I’ve been meaning to upgrade my smart TV for a few months now.
However, nothing caught my eye until I came across the new 65-inch Samsung UHD Curved Smart TV.
The device sports all the features I have been looking for, but my main concern was its compatibility with HomeKit since all my smart devices are connected using the system.
None of the Samsung TVs come with compatibility with HomeKit.
Fortunately, after a bit of research, I found a relatively simple workaround to connect incompatible devices to HomeKit.
Does Samsung TV Work with HomeKit?
Samsung TV works with HomeKit using a Homebridge hub or device. Using Homebridge, the Samsung TV can be controlled via the HomeKit app on your iPhone or iPad.
Does Samsung TV Natively Support HomeKit?
Samsung Smart TVs do not natively come with support for HomeKit integration.
One of the main reasons behind this omission is that to achieve the ‘Works with HomeKit’ logo, third-party manufacturers must meet some set guidelines.
Apple requires manufacturers to get their smart devices certified under the MFi (Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad) licensing program which requires the product to be compatible with a list of security specifications.
This also includes installing Apple’s patented microchip in the gadget. These extensive requirements add to the manufacturing costs that are inevitably passed on to the consumer.
Thus, most brands end up skipping the certification.
However, Homebridge integration has changed the way consumers perceive smart devices that are not compatible with HomeKit.
How to Integrate Samsung TV with HomeKit?
After searching the internet for hours, I concluded that the most efficient way to integrate your Samsung TV with HomeKit is using Homebridge.
The system helps in integrating smart gadgets with HomeKit even if they don’t natively support it.
There are two main methods of connecting your Samsung Smart TV, as well as other smart devices, with HomeKit:
- Setting up Homebridge on your PC or laptop.
- Setting up a Homebridge Hub.
What is Homebridge?
Homebridge is a community-driven third-party service that encompasses thousands of plugins developed by smart product manufacturers, developers, and tech enthusiasts for integrating different products with HomeKit.
The server emulates the HomeKit API creating a bridge between incompatible devices and HomeKit.
The available plugins can either be accessed using the PC used to set Homebridge or a raspberry pi.
Even if the product does not support Siri, these plugins can be loaded onto the assistant for voice controls.
As the service is community-driven, plugins for new products are always pouring in. In the past few years, more than 2000 devices have been made compatible with Homebridge.
The best part is, setting up a Homebridge system does not require high-end hardware.
Now that you know what Homebridge is, here is a breakdown of how you can set up your Samsung TV with HomeKit using the platform.
Homebridge on a Computer or Homebridge on a Hub
As mentioned, there are two main methods of setting up the Homebridge system.
You can either use the dated practice of setting up Homebridge on your PC or go for the relatively newer and easier procedure of using a Homebridge hub to connect your gadgets to HomeKit.
Setting up Homebridge on a computer seems like an easy and efficient solution.
Still, it requires a lot of technical knowledge and is not sustainable in terms of power.
To access your connected devices at all times, you have to keep the computer turned on at all times.
If the machine loses power, all your connected devices will stop working. Hence, using a PC to set up your Homebridge system is highly inefficient and unproductive.
The Homebridge hub, on the other hand, is an accessible and inconspicuous device that is not only easier to set up but is also power efficient.
Once it is set up, you can leave it running in the background without worrying about increased power usage.
The process is much more efficient and makes a lot more sense.
Connecting Samsung TV With HomeKit Using HOOBS Homebridge Hub
After I decided I would use the Homebridge system to integrate my Samsung TV with HomeKit, I searched for the best and most efficient method of doing so.
There are many Homebridge hubs available on the market. However, I decided to go for HOOBS or Homebridge Out of the Box due to its ease of use.
It is a hassle-free plug-and-play sort of device that integrates with HomeKit seamlessly without requiring any coding know-how.
As compared to building a Homebridge system using a PC, HOOBS does not require excessive configuration of every product I use.
Hence, now I don’t have to fuss about a product’s HomeKit compatibility before buying it.

Samsung TV plugin for Homebridge
This plugin allows you to control your Samsung TV (models until 2014) with HomeKit and Siri.
- Install homebridge using: npm install -g homebridge
- Install this plugin using: npm install -g homebridge-samsungtv-control
- Update your configuration file. See the sample below.

| send_delay | When switching to another channel the individual keys will be send with a short delay (in ms) between them. (default 400) |
The first numeric characteristic represents the volume. When changing the volume characteristic the number represents the count of times the volume up or down key will be triggered. In other words to increase the volume by 3 units, the characteristic should be set to 3, to decrease the volume by 2 units e.g. the value would be -2. By setting volume to 0 the mute key will be triggered.
The next characteristic represents the channel. To set a channel just set up a scene with the numeric value of the channel.
The last characteristic allows sending any key from this list without the KEY_ at the beginning. To send the pre-channel key e.g. set up a scene where this characteristic will be set to PRECH .
The volume, channel and key characteristics send single keys with a short delay between them to accomplish their task. Therefore to set these characteristics values you should set up a scene with the desired value in the corresponding characteristics so that not every single change will be send before you’ve finished typing.
Since some Samsung TV’s will disconnect from the network when turned off it is not possible to turn them back on again over network. Furthermore it is not possible to observe current values such as the volume or the channel. Therefore only channel changes that where made through this plugin will be tracked (channel changes with the regular remote for example can not be tracked).
Newer Samsung TV’s (from 2014)
By now, only Samsung TV’s until 2014 are supported by this plugin because Samsung dropped the old remote control protocol from their newer tv series. Samsung unfortunately has no documentation on how to pair with the newer tv’s and remote control them afterwards. The current state of reverse engineering the newer api can be seen here (contribution is welcome).

О том, какие телевизоры будут поддерживать iTunes, AirPlay 2 и HomeKit было объявлено компанией Apple. Эппл выпустила список всех телевизоров, которые будут поддерживать перечисленные приложения. iTunes Movies & TV
Приложение iTunes предоставляет Smart TV доступ к полной библиотеке фильмов от Эппл ТВ. Фильмы можно покупать, брать напрокат и воспроизводить напрямую. Контент доступен в HD и 4K качестве. Видео с высоким динамическим диапазоном (HDR10 + и Dolby Vision) также находится в портфолио Apple. Если вы уже создали цифровую коллекцию фильмов в iTunes, вам просто нужно войти в систему и напрямую воспроизводить купленные / прокатные фильмы и сериалы.
Apple Home Kit
С Apple HomeKit на устройствах с платформой iOS можно легко и безопасно управлять совместимыми инструментами HomeKit. Можно, например, просматривать изображение с камеры наблюдения, регулировать температуру в комнате или включать телевизор с помощью своего смартфона или планшета.
Также можно запрограммировать свои собственные режимы. Можно, например, создавать сценарий для «фильмов». Также есть возможность управлять яркостью освещения в помещении, включением / отключением телевизора, AV-ресивера либо манипулировать программами холодильника.
Apple AirPlay 2
Протокол передачи AirPlay 2 позволяет по беспроводной связи передавать видео, музыку и изображения из iTunes, iOS, Mac и Apple TV на совместимые устройства. Хотите показать свои праздничные фотографии? Два клика и фотографии отобразятся во весь формат на вашем телевизоре.
Те же самые операции можно выполнять не только с домашним видео. Это могут быть приложения потокового видео, перенесенные на дисплей телевизора. С AirPlay2 динамики телевизора можно объединить параллельно с другими динамиками в одну «музыкальную систему».

Что касается фирмы Samsung, то она будет оснащать свои Smart телевизоры 2018 и 2019 годов весной 2019 года AirPlay 2. Приложение iTunes также должно появиться без промедлений. Внедрение HomeKit не рассматривалось компанией, поскольку Samsung, вероятно, будет использовать свою собственную систему Smart Things IoT.
Высококачественные модели LG и Sony 2019 года, скорее всего, будут поддерживать AirPlay 2 и HomeKit сразу с завода. О внедрении приложения iTunes Movies & TV в модели LG и Sony пока не сообщается.
